Powell is a Professor Emeritus of History at Tulane University, and is the author of the acclaimed book on the founding of New Orleans, The Accidental City. Powell held the James H. Clark Endowed Chair in American Civilization and was director of the New Orleans Center for the Gulf South. He continues to write books, articles and book chapters. He also lectures and writes for newspapers and scholarly journals.
